Obsolete Pump Impeller Recreated in 4 Weeks Using On-Demand Manufacturing

Client & Context:

The project involved the deck seal pump impeller for a Hafnia vessel—a critical component responsible for transferring mechanical energy to the pumped fluid in a harsh marine environment.

The Challenge:

The original impeller had become obsolete, with no readily available spares and no active supplier. Without a replacement, the pump risked extended downtime, affecting vessel operations and compliance.

The Solution:

Pelagus 3D reproduced the impeller using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) and Stainless Steel 316L, chosen for its corrosion resistance and mechanical durability in marine conditions. The part was reverse engineered and additively manufactured based on digital design specifications.

The Results:

  • Fully functional replacement for an obsolete component
  • Delivered in just 4 weeks
  • Dimensions: 153 × 153 × 45 mm
  • Weight: 2.6 kg
  • Material: Stainless Steel 316L, optimized for marine use

Why It Matters:

This case highlights the value of on-demand manufacturing for legacy and out-of-production parts. Rather than redesigning an entire system or waiting months for tooling, OEMs and asset owners can restore functionality within weeks—minimizing downtime, preserving operational continuity, and avoiding costly system replacements.
